Avocados are naturally cholesterol-free but contain traces of beta-sitosterol, a sterol with different metabolic properties compared to cholesterol.
Avocados are rich in vitamins:
- Vitamin C: Approximately 11 mg per 100 g
- Pro-vitamin A: 0.185 mg per 100 g, comparable to peaches and plums
- B vitamins: All B vitamins are present at levels 5-10 times higher than most fresh fruits
- Vitamin E: 1.85 mg per 100 g, significantly higher than in other fresh fruits (0.1 to 0.6 mg).
Due to their high fat content, predominantly unsaturated fatty acids beneficial for cardiovascular health, avocados are ideal for individuals with high calorie needs (adolescents, athletes, growing children), providing an average of 138 kcal per 100 g, though calorie levels can vary.
When served with lemon juice rather than high-fat sauces, calorie intake can be moderated. However, consumption should be moderated in low-calorie or low-fat diets. Avocados are highly digestible and well-tolerated due to their predominantly unsaturated lipids and soft flesh texture when ripe.
